Welcome to Cardio Cypher. This site is dedicated to the expanding intersection of Digital Health, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Healthcare, specifically Cardiology and Electrophysiology (EP). Healthcare technology has advanced rapidly over the past decade as many large consumer technology companies have shifted their focus to this space and smaller digital health startups are constantly expanding (having raised almost $30 billion in venture funding in 2021 alone). As a result, the amount of hardware and software that allows users to track health-related information has proliferated, sometimes with regulatory guidance and approval, but often without. While these digital health tools have been rapidly adopted by consumers, physicians and hospital systems have been slow to adapt. There are numerous reasons for this, including patient privacy and cybersecurity, lack of workflow practices and reimbursement methods, and concerns about accuracy and safety, among other factors. Exponentially expanding AI and ML tools – that are increasingly accurate and efficient – can help, but many healthcare providers are not facile with these agents. Furthermore, although these instruments hold great promise, their accuracy and benefit has not been properly assessed and demonstrated through rigorous clinical study.
Cardio Cypher was created to serve as a platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration and critical analysis of the latest advancements in this field. We will explore developing digital health tools relevant to the world of Cardiology, such as the Apple Watch, Fitbit and KardiaMobile monitors, as well as their accompanying evidence and regulatory approvals (or lack thereof). We will also review the expanding use of AI and ML in clinical trials and medical data analysis. By providing accessible information and fostering discussion, we hope to empower patients, consumers, and healthcare professionals to adopt and optimize the use of these tools in their daily life and practice.
A Resources page has been created with links to clinical reviews and professional society guidelines regarding the use of AI and digital health in healthcare, Cardiology and EP. I would love to hear from readers with suggestions or comments and can be reached on the Contact page, and please consider subscribing to the Newsletter which will be used to update readers when a new post is published.
The next post will follow shortly and will be a general overview of AI and ML with examples of how it is already being used in the industry. This should be helpful for readers without a background in this space.
